Event Details

To celebrate World Wetlands Day on Sunday, 2 February 2020, the National Wetland Trust is hosting a family fun day at Rotopiko (south of Ohaupo) from 10:30am to 2:30pm.

An estimated 40% of all species world-wide breed in wetlands. In New Zealand, wetlands now occupy just 1% of our land cover. On top of that, almost a third of wetlands plants are threatened or at risk.  That’s why there’s heaps of awesome work happening across the region to rebuild these unique environments.

This ‘flax-roots’ event is a great opportunity to celebrate wetland biodiversity and learn about the animals and organisms living in these areas, like the shy pūweto (spotless crake). You can walk the discovery trail, take part in activities and games, as well as experience an ancient peat lake and kahikatea forest.
