Barrett Bush Reserve is one of Tui 2000 Inc projects. The bush is enhanced and maintained by a dedicated group of around 10 Friends of Barrett Bush. The 5ha reserve is located at Koromatua south west of Hamilton and is a lowland forest remnant surrounded in farmland.
The group has been working at the Reserve for nearly 20years. Here is a snippet from the latest working bee (July 2014) held at the reserve at the beginning of July. A pleasant day was experienced at Barrett Bush with people enjoying planting carex, kahikatea and pukatea. The previous plantings were somewhat inundated resembling a lagoon more so than a swamp. The planting site was slightly modified to focus on higher ground. After the planting the group we moved off to other areas of the reserve to weed. One member of the group set traps and another renewed baits at the poison stations. An extensive planting is being undertaken in a covenant area adjacent to Barrett Bush which will provide an additional area of habitat and food for the birds in the area.
