The Pokaiora clearings are an excellent example of a typical frost flat ecosystem dominated by Dracophyllum subulatum and show a great example of forest ecotones grading into Phyllocladus alpinus before changing into the large podocarp forest Pureora is so famous for. The walk in to the clearings is only an hour where we will be looking out for plants such as Pimelea tomentosa, Melicytus flexuosus and Calluna vulgaris. On the walk in plants such as Dactylanthus, Coriaria plumosa and Ourisia macrophylla can also be seen.
