The Miranda wetlands are internationally recognised for their importance as a wildlife refuge and there are some interesting plants there too! We will start at the Miranda Shorebird Centre to look at the facility and exhibits plus the wetland created around the Centre. A short drive north of the Centre will bring us to the "famous" road side Miranda mistletoe Ileostylus micranthus , discovered a few years ago after road workers nearly destroyed the host plant. Continuing north and through Kaiaua on to the Waharau Regional Park Reserve, we can look at the flora of the eastern side of the Hunua range that overlooks the Firth of Thames if time allows.
Meet: 9.30am Miranda Shorebird Centre, just north of Miranda township, East Coast Rd.
